Flamenco Camp for Kids

JOIN US ON AN IMAGINARY TRIP TO SPAIN...
Each day we dance, sing, and join in rhythm play as we explore flamenco dance and music. We read Spanish stories, create art projects based on Spanish art and architecture, and enjoy traditional Spanish snacks, all while learning simple Spanish vocabulary.

The fun culminates in a festive celebration on the last day with churros y chocolate, a favorite Spanish treat.

Desplazados/ Displaced at Northern Spark

  • St. Paul Farmers' Market

A new performance work by Deborah Elias at Northern Spark 2017

It could be us…

Do you ever wonder what would happen if you lost everything?

If you were forced to leave your home? To leave loved ones behind?

Where would you go?

Who would help you?

How could we help each other?

Let the heart-pounding rhythms and soulful tones of flamenco lead you through this journey. Through on-site and roving flamenco performances, Desplazados/Displaced will explore these questions, illuminating and expressing the plight of people displaced from their homes by the impacts of climate change.

Featuring puppets by BareBones Productions and a compelling cast of 15 dancers and musicians, be prepared to pitch in, sing along, and help save us from the flood – Connecting is the best hope we have to save us all.

On-site performances will tell the story in three scenes:

  • Home: Where do we belong?
  • Destruction: We must work together to survive
  • Grief: Goodbye, adios

Roving performances throughout Lowertown will embody the sense of displacement and traveling with nowhere to go.

Location

St. Paul Farmers' Market (north end, along 5th Street)

290 5th St E, St. Paul, 55101

Coro Flamenco at Art Shanty

Coro Flamenco at Art Shanty

In a juxtaposition of Southern Spain and Minnesota, this combination flamenco procession, performance, and sing along will bring color and warmth to the surface of a frozen lake at the Art Shanty On-Ice Program. The Art Shanty On-Ice Program is a winter tradition in the arts! It features creative Ice Shanties (think artsy ice-fishing shacks) and lively performances on the frozen surface of White Bear Lake. For 10 years, Art Shanty Projects has turned a frozen lake surface into an interactive, artist-driven temporary community that expands notions of art and artist through a month-long festival.

The Coro Flamenco Street Choir will process around the art shanties on the ice and ultimately gather around the bonfire to sing and dance to traditional flamenco songs. Visitors are invited to join the procession and/or meet up at the bonfire to join in the fun by doing palmas (rhythmic hand clapping), playing rhythm instruments, and singing along.

The Art Shanty On-Ice Program will be located approximately 1500 ft offshore, on the frozen surface of White Bear Lake. Access is via the boat ramp in White Bear Lake County Park. Get Driving Directions.

We strongly encourage visitors to dress for cold weather and snow: boots, snow pants, coat, hats, mittens, scarf, etc. to ensure an enjoyable experience.

FAMILY FRIENDLY AND FREE!
